Discover Participathon, a dynamic “true participation and hackathon” model where young people co-design solutions to real-world challenges and bring them to life.
Rooted in Ashoka’s mission “Everyone is a Changemaker”, this approach strengthens belonging, creativity, and agency while making civic participation exciting and relevant.
Research shows that young people are becoming increasingly unhappy. The polarisation of adults leads to the radicalisation of young people, as demonstrated, for example, by the results of the elections in Poland. In the eyes of young people, today's definition of success is directly linked to possession and materialism. Everything is happening very quickly, and content on social media influences their self-esteem and well-being. All this makes it increasingly difficult for young people.
In 2024, young leaders told us how they want to be involved (true participation through the eyes of young people and 6 lessons from conversations with young leaders).
Participathon – first step towards a change
Today, our response to these challenges is to engage youth in co-creating a process of genuine participation that is inclusive, attractive and changes attitudes through experience. It also means being part of a group and working together. True participation empowers people. That is why we invite young people to take part in the process of designing solutions – Participathon.
It is:
- a combination of participation and a hackathon (a marathon of designing solutions mainly associated with technological challenges) translated to social cases,
- an intensive, tailored, 2-day event (for which young people prepare themselves) during which young participants will work together to develop solutions to challenges through deep engagement and co-creation,
- a process, during which the participants will find solutions that are attractive to them and that they want to get involved in, answering i.e. the question ‘How to make social engagement more attractive to young people?’,
- an experience where we do not focus on technology, but we do not exclude it either, provided that it strengthens the solution and does not become the solution itself.
