One Girl, One Mission: A Safer World for Women and Girls
From trauma to triumph. Favour Effiom is turning her pain into a movement that’s saving lives.
Changemaker’s Journey
At sixteen, Favour was a victim of sexual abuse—a harrowing experience that gave her a reality check and made her realise that there could be many others like her in need of support. This realisation prompted her to start an initiative to raise awareness, provide support, and protect victims with similar experiences. She is committed to ensuring that more women, girls, and children do not have to endure the trauma of abuse without support and that society recognises these vices and takes collective action to tackle them.
Favour began her journey alongside her mother and sister, collaborating to establish We Are Reality Foundation. As the initiative grew, she needed more hands to reach a wider audience and offer greater support to survivors. To expand their impact, she sought the collaboration of her local community, including the Nigerian Police Force, the anti-cultism squad in her state, and the State Commissioner. She is working to create a safer and more secure environment for everyone through these partnerships.
The Initiative
Favour founded We Are Reality Foundation to advocate against teenage pregnancy, sex trafficking, child marriage, rape, gender inequality, and other forms of abuse affecting women, girls, and children. She also created the foundation as a safe space for survivors of these injustices.
The foundation supports them through rehabilitation, access to education, and skills training—helping them rebuild self-confidence, gain financial independence, and reintegrate into society.
Favour had doubts on her journey to building We Are Reality Foundation. Her biggest fear was that she might struggle to truly connect with victims or offer the support they genuinely needed. However, today, the foundation has touched the lives of many young girls, providing hope, healing, and a path forward.
Impact
One of the foundation’s most notable impacts is the story of a young girl who was raped, and as a result, had an unwanted pregnancy. After giving birth, she struggled to connect with her baby due to the painful circumstances surrounding its conception. However, after participating in We Are Reality Foundation’s three-month rehabilitation programme, she experienced a profound transformation. She has since been able to bond with and care for her child. This impact was not just felt by this girl but also by her family and the wider community. Favour emphasises that stories like this are what fill her with hope and a deep sense of purpose.
Future Aspirations
Favour hopes to establish a well-equipped community rehabilitation centre for abused girls and women, providing real-time support from medical and mental health professionals.
She recognises that for every victim of abuse, there is an abuser—often a boy with a dysfunctional upbringing. Understanding this, Favour believes that tackling sexual abuse and related vices requires addressing the root causes. As part of her mission, she plans to involve both abusers and their parents in the transformation process.
Through We Are Reality Foundation’s upcoming initiative, Boys to Men, she aims to educate young boys and parents, advocating that intentional parenting should not be limited to girls but should extend to boys as well. She strongly believes that young boys must be raised to become protectors, not predators.
Everyone a Changemaker
Favour encourages young people to channel their creativity into changemaking and remain resilient in pursuing their goals, no matter the obstacles.
“Everyone should be a changemaker because, in a world with so many problems, the more people we have tackling these challenges, the closer we get to a happier world—one where everyone can experience love, peace, and unity.”
