Introduction
Through an organization called Vuvuzela, Craig Slevin and Adam Fraser are bridging the digital divide in South Africa by creating one-stop information communication technology (ICT) kiosks that foster job creation, improve computer literacy, and bring ICT to rural areas. Founders Adam Fraser and Craig Slevin, each with more than ten years of experience in the IT sector, realized that the traditional methods of spreading access to IT services in rural areas by encouraging the donation of old and obsolete computers was not effective. Craig and Adam realized that by training and employing motivated individuals to run their own computer kiosks as franchises, local people could become powerful introducers of new technology (i.e. faxing, copying, printing, email, Internet) and computer skills to rural communities throughout South Africa. Based upon this premise, Vuvuzela is alleviating poverty and creating jobs through its franchise model, as well as bringing computer skills, access to information technology, and education to rural communities.
