Societies around the globe have seen an increase in violence and crime, which is directly tied to poverty and inequality. Many have been left behind and as their voices continue to become invisible, criminal organizations fill the power void. How are we responsible as civil society, to put an end to this? How can we rebuild the damaged social fabric, and thus, create a path towards peace?

Saskia Niño de Rivera, Reinserta A.C.

Saskia is currently the co-founder and spokesperson of Reinserta A.C., which she decided to create in order to build a safer Mexico through its prison system.

In 2015, Saskia influenced the Motherhood in Prison clause in the National Criminal Enforcement Law. She conducted a profile study of more than 800 kidnappers and also headed the motherhood in prison study, where more than 11 prisons were analyzed.

She was nominated for the Nelson Mandela-Graça Machel 2016 Award, received the Iberoamerica Medal from the Honoris Causa Foundation, and the award "Defense of Human Rights of people deprived of liberty" by the Legal Forum. Saskia won the “2019 Leadership in Public Life Award” of the Global Leadership Awards of Vital Voices. Furthermore, she received in name of Reinserta, the “Love Prize for Youth Advocacy” as the best social project in the 17th Nobel Peace Prize Summit in Mérida, Yucatán. She is the winner of the “Social Compromise Recognition 2019” of CEMEFI and the “International Award 2020” of the Diane Von Furstenberg Foundation.

She is member of the System for Children of Mexico City, as a representative of the civil society, as well as being chosen in 2019 to be a civil society representative in the National Security Council of Mexico
