When Ashoka started supporting social entrepreneurs 40 years ago, the world had a sense of permanence about it. Where entrenched ways of doing things had negative impacts, we supported Fellows who used innovation to unlock change. For large organizations change could feel like a comfortable process: technological, social, and environmental change all behaving somewhat predictably. Today, however, as we stand at the beginning of a new decade, that sense of permanence has been replaced by one of flux.

No matter how big, how powerful, how capable, an organization is, the scale and complexity of the change we face today means no one can go alone. The skills, passion, knowledge, and inspiration needed to solve the world’s problems do not exist in one place, they are distributed. Today’s challenges require the creativity not of one organization, but of everyone.
