Millions of people have been compelled to abandon their homes due to Russia's full- scale invasion of Ukraine. Nearly 6 million Ukrainian refugees have sought refuge across Europe. These individuals have faced unimaginable challenges, leaving behind their homes, their communities, and their very way of life. While many of them now benefit from temporary protection mechanisms, they still confront numerous obstacles and uncertainties as they strive to rebuild their lives. The situation is not just a challenge for the refugees themselves; it is also a challenge for the countries that have generously opened their doors to them.
At Ashoka, we firmly believe that identifying and catalyzing changemaking within and alongside people on the move is a pivotal lever for transforming the broken systems that govern migration. Our experience in the field of migration over the past eight years taught us that we must break free from the false dichotomy of "movers" and "stayers." Movement should be seen as a shared experience and an opportunity for positive change.
Instead of framing migration as a problem, we must acknowledge the knowledge, insights, and resources that migrants and their communities bring with them. These assets are not only valuable for their own well-being but also for the greater societal good.
