Across the world, women have suffered disproportionate job and income losses due to the Covid-19 pandemic and they are returning to work slower than their male counterparts. Women are particularly under-represented in tech jobs. As one of the fastest growing sectors of the global economy, addressing the gender tech gap is critical not just for building a more just economy, but also to address bias in technologies developed and deployed. The emerging drone and robotics sector is a case in point.
Recognizing the importance of women and local expertise, Ashoka Fellow Sonja Betschart co-founded WeRobotics and its global network of Flying Labs across Asia, Africa and Latin America to grow the Majority World's and women's leadership in the emerging Drone for Good sector. From humanitarian aid delivery, to climate change and deforestation monitoring, there are many ways drones can be put to good use. What matters more than access to technology, however, is whose hands it is in.
