Rural jobs are facing a number of obstacles. Those based on extractive industries – mining (coal, metal, diamonds etc), oil, even peat moss – are facing pressures to adapt to mitigate climate change risks. For farmers, low-cost, high-production demands have jeopardized the balance of ecosystems in which they work. This is more than an economic struggle. Issues of identity and purpose are tied up on the transition too.
