After the initial emergency pandemic response phase begins to wind down, the effort to rebuild economies and societies is going to be one of the biggest global challenges for humanity since the end of World War II, and we will need everyone’s full talents, contributions and ideas to come out the other side stronger.

In this effort, how do we capitalize on increased sentiments of social solidarity in societies to ensure local re-imagining and re-building is a collective effort, and that towns and cities come out the other end more inclusive and socially cohesive than ever?

This policy salon will focus on how governments and citizen sector organizations can help cities and towns undertake “inclusive recovery planning” efforts to help towns and cities “re-build better” in the wake of COVID-19. 

The panel speakers have all designed and implemented tools to help multiple actors in cities re-design themselves into more inclusive, socially cohesive places. Together, we will reflect on their individual experiences supporting cities to advance inclusion, as well as on a tool they have created together – the Local Inclusion Action Tool or LIAT. The LIAT, developed by OECD, Migration Policy Group (MPG), Welcoming International and Intercultural Cities programme at the Council of Europe, is an attempt to distill the most up-to-date knowledge on what works in terms of migrant and refugee inclusion at the local level. Participants will explain how this tool can be retrofitted to meet the needs of this remarkable historic moment.
