Seeing the situations of Primary Government Schools in India, we realize that while they do provide basic amenities, they do not have an environment that can motivate students or instil in them the willingness to learn; as most of the students are not confident, not capable of doing basic arithmetic, not able to communicate clearly and lack social skills.

The Solution

They started going to Primary Government schools every Saturday to educate the children with our volunteer's help. They are teaching basic arithmetic and communication skills while imparting social skills using innovative techniques. 

Indeed it just takes them 2 hours of time and the results are really inspiring. To instil the zeal of learning in children, they are transforming those dull walls in schools into interactive learning environments by coming up with a makeover by preparing colourful educational charts. 

Apart from improving the skills of children, volunteers are feeling contented as they are a part of shaping tomorrow’s generation.

Many underprivileged children who come from underprivileged backgrounds cannot afford to purchase the books they need for their learning.

The Solution

BookNU solves the issue by accepting book donations. The best place to get book donations are schools, where each year during April, thousands of kids go to the next class and BookNU provides them with a way to help someone else use their books. All of these donated books are then delivered to the identified schools where the majority of the students come from a challenging background.

“BookNU” is a book donations platform that connects schools with underprivileged children. It provides a way to reuse books so that underprivileged children are benefited from it. BookNU provides them with a way to help people donate books for their juniors. Apart from that, the BookNU also accepts general year-round book donations.

In today’s scenario, there is a huge difference between the academic knowledge acquired by a student and the practical knowledge necessary to work in the field. This means that employers are not finding the required talent in recent graduates and are bound to employ only the experienced ones. Thus, the younger generation who is eager to work with great zeal and enthusiasm is not entering the technologically advanced work environment. In addition, the accessibility and affordability of technology is limited only to a class of people and not to the general population.

RK Crystal will provide free website and other technological assistance to those entrepreneurs, who can not afford the assisstance, to build their own start-ups, their entrepreneurial journey. They will also provide free education and training to the young generation to make them capable of working with great expertise in this technologically driven environment and can find the jobs or start their own businesses easily. It will also help employers find the right employees so that their firm could grow rapidly.

With a team of 3, Sharanya has established two DEW centres across Bangalore with active expansion plans. Success to them is simply every time a child smiles quietly to himself while reading a book. She is currently studying in Grade 11 and wishes to go to college in Bangalore after.

The sector of tech entrepreneurship globally and in India lacks diversity and needs more female participation. Such gaps are evidently seen in STEM fields which need to be bridged.

The Solution

Sakshi boosts prospects for girls in tech by helping them experience science in action and supports them to take the Technovation challenge. Technovation, a Silicon Valley based initiative, offers girls around the world the opportunity to learn the skills they need to emerge as tech entrepreneurs and problem solvers. Girls work in teams to build both a mobile app and a business plan to launch that app, supported by mentors and guided by the Technovation curriculum.

The Venture

While she was unable to participate in the challenge as part of her school team, Sakshi understood the significance of indulging in technology for girls and wanted to make it available to those who cannot access such opportunities otherwise. She started working in a small CSR-funded school with 25 girls in Bangalore and was soon mentoring over 300 girls by the end of the second year. It didn’t take long for Technovation to recognize her efforts and soon made her their ambassador for India. With Technovation’s network, Sakshi is expanding operations in multiple cities in India for the next season and will be connecting the girls with mentors in industry giants like Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, Google, Adobe and Qualcomm. These girls have now fallen in love with Computer Science and aren’t afraid of it anymore. They all dream to solve more problems around them and have embarked on a journey to be internationally minded citizens.

Sakshi is an 11th grader at Christ Junior College, pursuing the IB Diploma Programme. She aspires to become a Digital Entrepreneur and Serial Investor. She is currently running her own venture called ‘The Farm Theory’ which aims to maximize agricultural produce utilisation and cultivate a healthy and sustainable lifestyle among people.

Math in schools is often taught in a procedural and uninspiring manner creating a fear of math in students.

The Solution

Innovative maths games have been developed to get students interested in the subject and to allow them to learn effectively. These games have been implemented in classrooms in collaboration with teachers.

Shamli has worked with 30 teachers, impacting the education of a few hundred students, 95% of which reported that they found the games interesting and engaging.

Shamli is a self-designed learner 15 year-old who hopes to share her love for mathematics with other students.

The root cause of many of the problems in slums and rural areas, whether it be child labor, child marriage, exploitation, wandering, addiction, discrimination etc. is lack of education and awareness in these communities.

The Solution

Sahil started Jagran with a team of kids from his slum in Kolkata as a theatre troupe that would primarily conduct awareness drives on social issues that affect their slum and rural communities. The Jagran Club then also evolved over the years from 2013 to 2015 as they had made performances in over 80 villages into a youth club that facilitates educational sessions for students from Kolkata’s slums through a Sunday school and through after-school sessions in different government schools that these kids are enrolled in.

The Venture

In addition to Sahil, there are two girls and three boys. All the boys work in electric fan shops as well as support their families and studies. Though the girls’ families had many restrictions to continuing school, they are still doing their studies. The team worked with multiple social sector organisations and civic bodies, the likes of local panchayats to World Vision Foundation in conducting awareness drives, street plays etc. from their inception in 2012 up till 2015. Since the girls had reached adolescence, their families were unwilling to allow for them to travel to rural regions or other slums. They started their Sunday school and after-school playful learning programme. They had to convince a local school principal to allow them to use the school ground during weekends and were able to impact the lives of over 60 children from the streets for three years. After winning the support of Play For Peace through persistent efforts in August of 2017, Sahil and his team have directly engaged with over 1200 kids in West Bengal in the learning sessions they’ve conducted using puppetry, filmmaking, theatre, drawing etc.

Though he had to move to Delhi for work due to familial and financial reasons, Sahil now aspires to complete his schooling and go to college. His aim now is to help his team establish and run a ‘Slumshala’ in Kolkata.

Yet, there is the lack of major awareness and education that younger student (Classes LKG-8) have on the concept of coding and low levels of interest and engagement that children have with existing coding education.

Jay proposes to solve this problem by creating a educational framework that works to gradually introduce students to coding in all classes through a variety of coding and coding-based activities that work to cover five developmental goals - Cerebral, Social, Physical, Emotional and Spiritual. Also, he hopes to immerse the students in a Visual Programming Language such as Scratch, a more intuitive coding platform.

1. Girl Child Education is one of the biggest challenges in Govandi, Mumbai. Most of the young girls are either engaged in home-based livelihood activities or are early married.

2. The M-East ward which forms the Eastern boundary of Mumbai is home for the city’s biggest dumping ground, which receives around 4,000 metric ton of garbage every day.

Due to a lack of safe drinking water and poor sanitation facilities, there is a high risk of infections that affect the nutritional status of children resulting in a larger prevalence of childhood malnutrition in this area.

The Solution

1. Building the capacities of other community children and youth, she is educating on these issues to other children so that she could take up collective actions with government departments and other stakeholders. Working with the existing Government systems would help in solving these issues. 
2. She is educating her peers in her school. During the lunch break, she takes up these issues and discusses with her peers as she believes, school is the common point where she could reach out to the children from other locations. 
3. Introducing Innovative approaches in the awareness generation programmes could be more effective in solving these issues.

Sensitizing community members through photography and street plays are unique in nature. She was trained in photography and street play facilitated by Save the Children. Photo exhibitions and street plays were conducted in the various parts of her localities.

The Venture

She has conducted more than 250 sessions on menstrual hygiene and other issues related to WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) since past two years. She has reached out to more than 1500 adolescent girls who have adopted healthy menstrual hygiene practices.

With such initiative, the local corporation got the attention of her. Later, she was invited by the local corporation to continue her promotion on WASH through street plays and drama during the Edu Fest 2016. She was felicitated by the local corporation for her excellent performance in the Drama competition.

As a Campaigner, she led the Community-based Campaign ‘WASH4LIFE’ in her slum community. She mobilized her children group and promoted WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) in Govandi through innovative methods of messaging (Street Plays, Photo Exhibition, and talk shows). Through this initiative, she, along with her team members, could reach out to 10000 community members.

Her actions in the field of addressing urban malnutrition in Mumbai slums helped in building sustainable community-based interventions in addressing the number of Severe Acute Malnourished (SAM) cases.

Reading books has several benefits. The habit of reading kindles curiosity enhances children’s imagination and provokes thought. Reading is a life-long learning experience, and nobody should be denied this experience. However, in most schools that serve the needs of the underprivileged in India, there aren’t many books for the students to read due to lack of funding. The existing books are not in very good condition and are often textbooks that lack appeal for the children. Hence, the children are missing out on the experience of reading books and the exposure them to think with different perspectives.

The Solution

The initiative allows people to donate children's books that are then sent to schools for underprivileged children. BooksThatFly.com encourages people to donate books that are no longer needed by the kids who have been promoted to the next grades. These books are given to school libraries where the books reach a large number of children.Vibha is currently driving this initiative in her school, in her local community, as well as other residential communities in Bangalore.

Books That Fly is a non-profit initiative that allows people to donate children’s books that are then sent to schools for underprivileged children. Most homes have books that are lying unused since the kids have outgrown them. Books That Fly encourages people to donate such books. These books are given to school libraries where the books reach many children. The books "fly" out of your home into the hands of children who really need them. Hence the name "Books That Fly".

With an exploding population, the education system in our country has come under great pressure. Karnataka state itself has over 50,000 government schools with over one- crore students. It’s a well-known fact that government schools are under-funded and have a crumbling infrastructure. They even lack basic facilities like sanitation, adequate desks or books. Due to poor salaries and poor working conditions, the teachers also lack the incentives to impart education. Government schools in the state suffer from a scarcity of funds for maintenance and infrastructure upgrades. The average annual grant received by a government school in Bangalore is approximately 15,000 rupees, which is highly inadequate to fully finance or upgrade necessities such as furniture, blackboards, teaching material, lab equipment etc.

The Solution

HelpEd seeks to address the above problem by using the Internet and social media platforms to connect prospective individual donors with needy government schools in the neighbourhood. HelpEd creates a low-cost, easily accessible channel to those who wish to extend a helping hand to schools in need.

The Venture

To address this, the Department of Public Instruction is running a nurturing program to source external funding to support Government schools.

Companies and NGOs can adopt schools in return for tax benefits and publicity/acknowledgement. To support this program, HelpEd leverages the Internet and social media platforms to connect prospective individual donors with needy government schools in the neighbourhood. HelpEd creates a low-cost, easily accessible channel to those who wish to extend a helping hand to schools in need. HelpEd bridges the accessibility gap by creating a “digital interface” between government schools and prospective donors. Similarly, funding sources for government schools are presently limited to state government grants. Help ED also facilitates funds from CSR grants of corporations, donations from local NGOs and mainly private individuals. HelpEd will expand this to a large citizen donor network in the neighbourhood and extending to remote places. In the next two years, Isana envisions this initiative to expand to many other cities or towns. HelpEd will grow by inviting multiple student ambassadors with each of them being responsible for one school region (e.g., one ambassador for 3-4 wards). She expects that all government schools in the city can be serviced by a team of 50 student ambassadors. Subsequently, the initiative can be expanded to rural areas of Karnataka by partnering with other NGOs operating in these regions.

Breaking the ideological barriers between those who provide infrastructure to villages and those who live in these villages is crucial to creating large-scale social change.

DOR The connect aim is to involve the villagers, so as to make them experience change first hand. By conducting various activities for and with the villagers, It aims at creating bonds and helping them realise the importance of a few small changes in their daily lives that could lead to the development of their village altogether. It also aims at being the facilitators of change in villages and helps them take these initiatives forward themselves.

The venture facilitates understanding and trust between those bringing development projects to the rural area and the rural communities themselves. The venture started its first initiatives in Village Islampur in which they partnered with the corporate social responsibility departments of companies like Oxygen, Artemis Hospitals and Pravah to test the project.

With Oxygen, the venture team conducted two eye camps, one cancer camp, one session on women’s health and introduced an incentive-based system to the villagers.

With Artemis, the team conducted general health awareness sessions in the local government school. With Pravah, the team helped women enrol in a skill development centre to acquire vocational training and work towards financial independence. These programs were successful in engaging villagers. DOR plans to develop a framework to work with rural communities in the future and will form core facilitation teams to implement strategies like those used in Village Islampur.

There was no singular platform for teenagers to actively participate in the process of contributing to resolving of issues they care about.

The Solution

The organization was made keeping in mind that there is a horde of problems whose solutions the youth want to contribute to but cannot. The primary aim was to help improve the quality of education and environment in government schools. Volunteers would go to government schools for given periods of time and assist in creating a healthy and safe environment for kids from slums to learn in, as well as teach them. Other aims included issues regarding the environment.

The Venture

We have united a team of people of different ages. Now, we plan to have an educational program where our members will go and teach in PMC Schools where the quality of education is in tatters. Moreover, for the environment, plans are on the way to make distribute paper bags and increase awareness about the environment by talking to people ranging from 11 to 25 years of age by talking in schools and colleges.

Shawon Chowdhury strongly believes in "Learning by Doing", so by using an advanced AI based Chabot, which will take inputs from its user through a web platform, then understand the requirements and continuously help by guiding in every line of code to teach programming in Bangla. It is basically one to one coaching but in a smart automated way in our local language. Students don't need to install code blocks or any software to learn coding. By using their web platform with internet connection he/she can learn anytime, anywhere- for free in a fun and effective way by solving real life problem with the guidance of an AI based chatbot. They will be able to select a character of their choice at the beginning to teach them. Chatbot characters such as, Tuktuki from Sisimpur, Nawab Siraj-ud-Dowla have been developed, to make the learning process more relatable to the children. And at the end, the children will be able to assess themselves and see their strengths and weaknesses through a profile set up on each child’s creative thinking level.

To eradicate illiteracy among the unprivileged children of Hatirpool area, Farhan Forhad started his initiative, “Alokito Angina”. This initiative is trying to increase the attendance of Hatirpool Taltola High School by providing education to the underprivileged. Farhan and his team try to manipulate the students and their parents by making them understand the importance of formal education. And providing them education facilities in the best possible and cheapest way. They are connecting with the students and becoming a part of their lives. Everything is taught in such a way by the teachers of the school so that even studying seems fun to them. Besides providing the students textbook education, basic skills and extracurricular activities are also being taught. 

Cox Bazar is one of the poorest areas of Bangladesh and its literacy rate is among the lowest in the country. Even those who are literate have inadequate English language skills and find it very difficult to gain employment in the cities. Shafiullah’s initiative, the Oralcox English Language Center (OELC) aims to solve this problem through attractive English language programs such as debates, quizzes, extempore speeches and long day English practice sessions. As a result, many of these students have gone on to attend public universities and join NGOs. Others have gone on to start their own tourism companies in the area. Shafiullah hopes that his efforts will open new opportunities for the people of Cox Bazar and help people to support themselves economically. 

Many teenagers feel pressured by their parents to pursue particular career paths rather than develop their talents and pursue their own dreams. His venture, Reflective Teens, encourages teenagers to develop their interests and learn from experts in relevant fields. The organization then helps these teenagers to pursue these interests professionally by helping them to publish their written works, art, or other similar creations. Yusuf hopes that his work will encourage teenagers to develop their skills and empower them to follow their dreams.

Problem Being Addressed

The kids from the red-light district in New Delhi (GB road) have low enrolment rates in schools. Additionally, they don’t have avenues to express themselves.

Mystical Movers teaches students dance by which many of the students explore their fears, notions and beliefs and induce positive mindset change. Dancing also helps students build relationships with fellow dancers by inculcating skills such as teamwork. Students present their stories through dance and become strong and bold human beings to express themselves and stand for what they believe in. Mystical Movers aim to enrol students in schools. They also aim to perform regularly in and outside India.

Impact

With a team of 5, The Mystical Movers conduct their workshops with 15 students on a daily basis. They have also successfully involved the mothers who were with them.

Problem being addressed

Dependence on Charity. The team at SPERO believes that anyone in the world should be pitied. Neither does someone have the right to assume a position of power just because by the accident of birth they are in a better position in society than another person. They truly believe that with the right guidance, and a good attitude the circumstances of birth can be changed.

Venture Brief

SPERO gives each child a ‘hand up’ that enables the child to understand the worth and value of talent and hard work. They conduct art competitions at underserved schools. The ages of the participants are between 10 and 14. the winner of the competition gets his/her artwork printed on a t-shirt. The profit from sales of the t-shirt is split between the artist and SPERO. Through SPERO the winner also gains access to internships and mentoring with the companies the venture plans to tie up with.

Impact

Currently, SPERO has sold 50 t-shirts in 2 months through word of mouth alone. They hope to be able to build on that now that the website and social media pages are up and running. SPERO is also focussing on tapping into the start-up and corporate sectors in the city for selling t-shirts in bulk. SPERO takes pride to be able to give Victor (the winner of the first art competition) the first instalment of his prize and paying his school fees and all other requirements for the 2018-19 academic year.

Problem being addressed

Among the school-going-children from Narikaruvar community, only 30% have regular attendance owing to high drop-out rate and prevalence of social ills. Since the gypsy community is on the move it is hard for the kids to enrol in regular school. Also, students don’t like coming to school owing to the abusive nature of the teachers and peers.

Venture Brief

Sakthi is creating ripples of change in the community by initiating every child to follow the path of education. He delivers talks to motivate his peers to join the school. For these children, things as basic as clothes, soap, water to bathe and a square meal serve as enticing offers. He has helped other parents to send their kids to school.

Impact

Sakthi has enrolled 40 Narikuravar students into schools. Achievement of basic behavioural and social change among the community is an apt measure of success. The students from this community are regular to school and the dropout rate is diminishing. Following frequent counselling being provided to the students, the children are well dressed and follow a hygienic lifestyle. The parents have understood the need to provide a balanced diet to their children. The girl students have overcome the traditional taboo and do not skip school after attaining puberty, which was a common practice.

Problem being addressed

Low-income families in villages cannot afford private tuition costs - humiliated by tuition centers and asked to pay upfront before taking classes’ leads to lack of access to the opportunity. An aspiration to get a better education and get better jobs leads nowhere since they have no guidance. There is also a gender-based restriction on girls’ higher education. A place where boys and girls do not interact much due to social conditioning and gender inequality.

Venture Brief

Farhat is running a tuition centre dedicated for low income students who cannot afford private tuition. She has adopted a holistic model wherein Fridays are for activity based learning and Saturdays are for general knowledge and discussions. Farhat focuses on students that need extra academic assistance. Her classes not only focus on academic problems she intended to bridge the gap between boys and girls and overcome the gender inequality by enabling better communication and interaction among her students.

Impact

Farhat currently tutors 20 kids, daily for 2 hours. Students are performing better in exams. They have also participated in government scholarship program. A larger ecosystem of educational aspiration is budding in the villages served by Farhat.
