Ashoka in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
Ashoka is the first global network of leading social entrepreneurs, united by the vision of an “Everyone a Changemaker” world. Since 2024, Ashoka has been selecting and supporting pioneering social entrepreneurs in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), who have joined our network of more than 540 Fellows across 23 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
With nearly 100 million inhabitants, the DRC is the second most populous country in Sub-Saharan Africa after Nigeria, and the largest French-speaking nation in Africa. It is home to the world’s second-largest tropical rainforest and produces around 70% of the world’s cobalt—a critical mineral for batteries. Notably, 65% of the population is under 25, reflecting a vibrant energy and immense potential for innovation.
Over the past 40 years, Ashoka has seen how system-changing social entrepreneurs drive inclusive social and economic development. Yet, to thrive and scale their impact, they need a supportive ecosystem. Together, we can build that ecosystem. Join us for a transformative and long-lasting change in the DRC!

Stéphanie Schmidt
DRC Country Lead, Ashoka
With over two decades at Ashoka across four continents, Stephanie spearheaded the launch of Ashoka in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This step was guided by her conviction that Congolese social entrepreneurs are a powerful force for inclusive socio-economic development, that they must be supported through a vibrant ecosystem, and that they can inspire millions of Congolese to become agents of change. Having lived in Africa for more than nine years, Stephanie’s work in Goma with World Relief—following her early career in management consulting—was a defining milestone in her personal and professional journey.
