Sidcot School

Sidcot 2

“Live Adventurously” is the mission statement at Sidcot School. This saying translates into an approach that encourages individual thought, questioning and exploration. The school’s education is as much about nurturing the spirit as it is about outstanding academic success. There is a real sense of community and connection, which looks beyond the traditional hierarchy of the school to see all its members as individuals.

We are keen to engage with other Changemaker schools, as well as schools in our locality, researchers, parents and businesses. We are looking for opportunities such as language exchanges, international projects, teacher training or any other real world learning projects.

Changemaking initiatives:

  • Centre for Peace and Global Studies
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Curriculum - the school has developed a unique version of the IB embedding the core Quaker values
  • A yurt village - a yurt village within the ‘peace fields’ as an alternative environment for student immersion

Jacqueline Bagnall

Director of Peace and Global Studies

Jackie started at Sidcot in Feb 2014. Appointed as the Head of the Centre for Peace and Global Studies, she had previously worked at the University of Exeter as a Senior Lecturer on Ethics and Leadership. Her work with young people has focused on leading change and developing the knowledge and skills to take action on social and environmental issues. Even whilst at Sidcot, shecontinues to work as an associate lecturer in Management and Leadership at the University of Exeter Business School. She also works on a voluntary basis with women and young people to raise self-esteem through mindful art-based therapy. All the work she does is underpinned by the core ethos of 'put people first'. She believes that that we must design systems that ensure people feel valued and respected. Her work at Sidcot School has been regarded as transformative, breathing life into the Quaker values that have lain at the heart of the school since its founding. She has driven the development of a powerful new curriculum across the school, assisting teachers in its development and implementation. Other projects such as the peace fields and the yurt village serve as a space in which the activities of the centre taken on a new context.
