Colombian Fellow’s Wilderness Education Program is Celebrated by NOLS

If you live in the city, you know how difficult it can be to connect with nature and, perhaps more important, to see the impacts of our unsustainable actions. This challenge is heightened in Colombia, where a devastating armed conflict has long kept urban residents from venturing out into rural areas. If they did, they would see how the conflict has wrought heavy deforestation.

The Emmy Award-Winning Film “The New Environmentalists”

The “The New Environmentalists” film series features portraits of six social innovators “who have placed themselves squarely in harm’s way to battle intimidating adversaries” in the fight for environmental justice. The innovators, including two Ashoka Fellows, are this year’s winners of the Goldman Environmental Prize, known as the “Nobel Prize of the environmental world.”

Two Ashoka Fellows Win Goldman Prize

We are thrilled to congratulate Ashoka Germany Fellow Ursula Sladek and Ashoka Indonesia Fellow Prigi Arisandi, who were just announced as 2 of 6 winners of this year’s Goldman Environmental Prize! The annual award, often referred to as the Nobel Prize for the environment, recognizes “grassroots environmental heroes around the world for sustained and significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment, often at great personal risk.

A Tribute to Shyam Chainani

On December 25, 2011, Shyam Chainani, the green activist and Founder of the Bombay Environmental Action Group (BEAG), passed away. He was one of the key environment and urban planning pioneers and champions, first in Bombay and then all of India and also beyond. In addition, he was an early, key India Member of Ashoka.
