R. Sargent Shriver, who died on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, was one of the founding members of Ashoka’s Councils and helped Ashoka in many ways over the decades.

The Ashoka community will miss him deeply.

He will always be a part of our history. As will his personal example of vision, values, humor, and commitment. And the professional example he set in creating and leading America’s War on Poverty and the Peace Corps. The Special Olympics, one of the great examples of social entrepreneurship, which was created by and is now still led by members of the Shriver family, is another statement of his and his family’s values.

Friends are working to create an Ashoka endowment in memory of this most remarkable friend and leader.

With sympathy to the Shriver family on behalf of the entire Ashoka community,

Bill Drayton, Chairman & CEO
