#LeadYoung - Malcolm Asher: Making hospitals more friendly for youth

When Malcolm Asher began volunteering in his local oncology/hematology outpatient clinic, he had no idea how profoundly this experience would impact the trajectory of his life and the lives of so many children around the globe. While volunteering, Malcolm saw how vulnerable and scared the children he interacted with were and wanted to alleviate even just a small piece of the pain they were experiencing.

Ashoka Fellow Catalina Escobar, this week's CNN Hero, is a lifeline for teen mothers in Colombia

Long-time advocate for the health of young girls and women Catalina Escobar was recently recognized as a CNN Hero. Escobar works as a "community crusader" in Cartagena, one of Colombia's largest cities where one-third of residents live at or below the poverty line, and, to complicate matters even further, where one in five girls aged 15 to 19 are or have been pregnant.

A Huge Energy Came Through the Prison Walls to Me

We in Hungary who are fighting for the freedom of an Ashoka Fellow Dr. Agnes Gereb, for the right of midwives to assist at homebirths and for the rights of Hungarian mothers' to fulfill their constitutional right to homebirth have been so fortunate to have Ashoka as our ally and friend.  From the moment Ashoka's Gabriella Benko responded to our message after Agnes was arrested on October 5th, we have had the full attention and support of your great organization.

Yes, We Can Do It

Barbara Grizzuti-Harrison said “Women's propensity to share confidences is universal. We confirm our reality by sharing.”  I am quoting this statement because I love it and it reminds me of all the inspirational women in the Birthing Project USA.  While I was flying from New Orleans to San Diego for the National Birthing Project conference, I was very eager to meet, share experiences, network and create collaboration among all the amazing Birthing Project community around the world.

Tightrope Enterprises

Managing any type of social enterprise is truly a tightrope act: you have to find this perfect balance between implementing effective programming, while also keeping yourself afloat administratively.
