Ashoka was named to honor the Indian Emperor Ashoka, one of the world's earliest great social entrepreneurs. After unifying India in the 3rd Century B.C., Emperor Ashoka renounced violence and became one of history's most tolerant, global-minded, and creative leaders, pioneering innovations in economic development and social welfare. For his creativity, global mindedness, and tolerance, Ashoka is renowned as one of the earliest examples of a social innovator. The Sanskrit word Ashoka means the "active absence of sorrow.

Ashoka vergibt derzeit an Fellows, die ohne ein Stipendium noch nicht Vollzeit an ihren Innovationen arbeiten können, ein bis zu dreijähriges Lebensunterhaltsstipendium. Dieses ermöglicht die volle Konzentration auf ihr Projekt und gleicht den Verdienstausfall aus, der durch die Aufgabe einer anderwertigen Beschäftigung entsteht.

Die Höhe des Stipendiums wird zwischen dem Fellow und Ashoka je nach tatsächlich nachgewiesenem Bedarf verhandelt und deckt nur die tatsächlich anfallenden Lebensunterhaltskosten ab - im Schnitt liegt der Wert in den letzten Jahren bei zwischen 30 000 Euro und 50 000 Euro brutto. Besonders weit fortgeschrittene Social Entrepreneurs können von Ashoka als Senior Fellows gewählt werden, die keine finanzielle Förderung mehr erhalten.
