Solution-based Journalism

Story bubbles on world map

The Right Livelihood Award and Ashoka Switzerland launched the initiative for Solution-Based Journalism (SBJ) within Ashoka’s Swiss Changemaker Program on November 24, 2015 with well-known journalists such as Frank Senn (SRF) and Judith Wittwer (Tagesanzeiger).

Solution-Based Journalism reports on solutions to social challenges. It communicates how leading social innovators approach their work, is thought-provoking, and inspires readers to act independently.

Solution-based journalism describes ways to create a better future and have journalism support social change.

A group of well-known journalists from different media houses, plus representatives from Ashoka Switzerland and the Right Livelihood Award, have agreed to spread this form of journalism throughout Switzerland. They plan to establish a platform that is independent of foundations and media houses. It will inform journalists about SBJ’s agenda, allow them to discover innovative approaches to solving problems, and present best practices from the media. At the same time, it will support Swiss changemakers to tell a story that is inspiring and can be published. SBJ aims to make this a part of the curriculum of leading journalism schools in Switzerland, such as Ringier and the MAZ.

“A Swiss platform, independent from individual organizations and media, on which journalists can find innovative projects, solution-based journalism principles, and social entrepreneurs as well as non-profit organizations—arousing attention for their Swiss projects—would be a tempting solution for both.”
