About Ashoka in Belgium Graphic

Ashoka Belgium was launched in 2007 when we began supporting social entrepreneurs in Belgium as Ashoka Fellows. Together with our partners, we have supported 10 social entrepreneurs and connected them into a dynamic peer network to help grow their ideas and impact.

We also work to ensure that every child masters empathy through our Changemaker Schools programme. Ashoka’s initiative is aimed at identifying and mobilising social entrepreneurs and pioneering schools having an innovative and ambitious vision for the future of  education. They receive support from a select and qualified group of leading influencers to help bring about a profound evolution in the education systems. In Belgium, 9 schools were selected across the three communities – Flemish, Walloon and the capital Brussels.

In 2013, we launched the first Impact programme, a social impact booster aiming at boosting Belgian social enterpreneurship network. They contribute in the structuring and professionalisation of the social entrepreneurship sector in a dedicated area, especially through collaborations between social entrepreneurs and the actors engaged in the issue. Between 2013 and 2016, around 30 participants successfully took part in the programme.

At our side in these programs is our Ashoka Support Network, composed of 23 business entrepreneurs.

In 2016, NGO Advisor has ranked Ashoka among the Top 10 NGOs in the world and is still growing as the largest network of social entrepreneurs worldwide.

Our Programs

Ashoka has pioneered the field of social entrepreneurship globally over the last 35 years through the search and selection of Ashoka Fellows (social entrepreneurs) in more than 85 countries. Amongst the Fellowship there are two Nobel Peace Prize winners. Since launching in Belgium just under 7 years ago we have elected and supported 10 Fellows who have positively impacted the lives of thousands of people.

I believe an organisation such Ashoka is really key because you build a network. Ashoka really engages you and gives you the feeling that you are part of a movement that really gives you the energy to go on and that you are not alone

-- Arnoud Raskin, founder of Mobile School, Ashoka Fellow, elected in 2011.

CMS new skills

Building on our experience with social entrepreneurs, we are now working with a growing network of 200 Ashoka Changemaker Schools and other essential stakeholders to rethink the role of education and restructure how our young people grow up so that everyone can become a changemaker.

The Ashoka Support Network (ASN) is a global community of successful, innovative leaders from a variety of fields who connect with the world’s leading social entrepreneurs to accelerate positive social change. They support Ashoka financially as well as strategically by offering their time and expertise and opening their networks to Ashoka.

Our strong and committed Belgian Ashoka Support Network go far beyond the role of anonymous donors. At Ashoka Belgium, we work hard on creating a true bond between our ASNs and our Fellows:

In Belgium, we have a support committee called the CODAC, which is recommended and implemented for each new Fellow joining Ashoka. This committee is composed of the fellow and three to four ASN members committed to supporting and counselling the Fellow. The aim of CODAC is to guide the Fellow in their entrepreneurial track and help them with personal or professional issues to allow them to move forward in the development of their project. Sessions between the ASNs and Fellow are organised at regular time intervals but may include a Senior Fellow or another guest on certain occasions.

Being an ASN member means bringing financial support, skills and a professional network to Fellows. But most of all, to us, it’s a new experience, bringing a touch of freshness and opening a window to an enthusiastic, very different professional world. It gives me access to a very varied network of people, with whom I can share experiences and good practices.
