"I volunteered to help write award nominations for Ashoka Fellows in Nigeria and Malawi. Due to my interest in Africa, I was encouraged to reach out to Bart Weetjens, a Fellow in Tanzania, founder of APOPO, an organization which trains African rats to detect landmines and early-stage Tuberculosis. I am now working with him in Tanzania assisting him with donor support for the APOPO project HeroRATS. I hope to deepen my understanding of the citizen sector and learn more about how partnerships between public, private and social enterprises can play a part in creating sustainable solutions to the problems of our time."

Create Compelling Video and Web Footage of HeroRats Detecting Landmines and Disease - Fellow Bart Weetjens

Virtual Tanzania

Ashoka Fellow: Bart Weetjens
Website: APOPO

Landmines continue to destroy millions of lives years after. Bart Weetjens has trained Giant Pouched Rats to effectively detect explosives in minute amounts, as well as tuberculosis.

Description of Volunteer Opportunity

Bart's organization, APOPO, saves lives in Africa by training rats to detect landmines and disease, even in its earliest stages. Bart created HeroRats to tell the stories of the rats, the organization, its staff and the lives they touch, generating needed support for APOPO.

APOPO has been hugely successful and is now improving its website and looking to make it more interactive.  APOPO has a number of videos, photos, and web quality footage of the rats at work but is lacking the time or the direct expertise to make these videos what they could be.

Technical video editing skills are needed (film and photography) and Bart needs a volunteer who could take the raw footage they have and create some simple but elegant videos for the web. The project would require some editing of footage, setting it to music, and posting to YouTube as well as the APOPO website. Ideally, they would like someone who might be interested in adding fresh content quarterly.

WOW your family and friends by becoming an important part of this spectacular program and help give APOPO a platform to connect to more people.

View their site at www.apopo.org or www.herorat.org

Dates:   AS SOON AS POSSIBLE for the time it takes to create a video, with opportunity for continuation

Required Skills and Experience:

Previous video creating experience is required, and APOPO would like to see some examples of your work to see if your style is a good fit.  If you have built similar short videos of other social entrepreneurs or non-profits in the past that would be a plus!

Fluency in web and English is a must.
