Ashoka Thailand began with the election of its first Ashoka Fellows in 1989. During the almost sixteen years since the program’s inception, democratic reforms in Thailand, including the adoption of a revised constitution in 1997, have resulted in a policy framework that is more supportive of civil society efforts and more open to innovative social initiatives than ever before. With eighty Fellows, Ashoka Thailand today is the fifth largest national fellowship in the world. Representing diverse backgrounds, this group includes individuals who are just launching their ideas as well as those who are more senior and are recognized nationally for their contributions. From 2000 – 2006, three Ashoka Fellows served as elected Senators in the Thai Senate, a prestigious body of independent policy makers. Other Ashoka Fellows serve in advisory roles to the Thai government, helping to shape national social and economic policy.
Ashoka Thailand has also strengthened our sector in Thailand with the “Citizen Base Initiative” (CBI), awarding the best plans for catalyzing support for lasting social change from a local community base. The mission of this program is to nurture an independent citizen sector, formulating its own agenda separate from government, international donors and foundations. And, beginning in 2007, Ashoka Thailand established the ‘Innovative Learning Initiative’ (ILI) to capture the insights, knowledge and successful strategies of Ashoka Fellows and encourage collaboration among them in the field of education/learning. Emerging from ILI is a new program, building on Fellows’ common strategy of putting youth in charge. It is called Youth Venture. Ashoka Youth Venture intends to tip Thailand’s perception and appreciation of youth and encourage young people (ages 12-20) to start and lead their own organizations for the betterment of their communities.
Volunteers and supporters throughout the country contribute to Ashoka Thailand in critical ways, giving their time, expertise and financial resources to build and nurture the profession of social entrepreneurship in Thailand.
