Google is a company that believes deeply in entrepreneurship. And this is a company that believes deeply in the power of information. We don’t think there’s another organization that combines these two things in a more compelling way than Ashoka.

Sankara, a wheelchair user most of his life due to muscular dystrophy, identified the need for a united network of and for disabled people across India. He is transforming a fragmented and neglected segment of society into a strong body of productive citizens. Sankara builds local level peer groups of disabled people to monitor individual’s rehabilitation and reinforce their confidence and capacities. Sankara then organizes these peer groups into state federations, giving them the necessary tools to advocate for their rights at the policy level. Sankara’s growing membership forms a solid base for what he envisions as a nationwide grassroots disability movement.
