Become a School Administrator for Special School for Deaf, Blind and Learning Disabled Children - Fellow Chris Omusi

On-site -- Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria

Ashoka Fellow: Chris Omusi
Project Charilove

Christopher Omusi uses a broad range of volunteers and individuals and businesses to teach, provide career guidance, and generally help the disabled. His teams enable physically disabled people to re-engage fully with mainstream society.

Description of Volunteer Opportunity

In Nigeria, unless a disabled person has significant help from family and friends they have little chance to live a rewarding life.  The few services and facilities available are filled to capacity and woefully ill-equipped. Public attitudes are those of scorn and neglect. There is little public education to reverse these corrosive attitudes and there is virtually NO outreach to the disabled population. The children suffer the most.

On-site -- Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, India

Ashoka Fellow: Satyan Mishra

Description of Volunteer Opportunity

Over the past nine years, Drishtee has developed an expertise in rolling out a unique last mile distribution network, built on both Information and Communication Technology (ICT) application and "ground Level entrepreneurship." The distribution network is represented by local entrepreneurs at the retail end who provide access to their community at minimum opportunity cost.

Produce Impact Study or Research on Agricultural Issues in North East India - Fellow Pranjal Baruah

On-site -- Guwahati, Assam, India

Ashoka Fellow: Pranjal Baruah

Pranjal Baruah is organizing farmers in Assam around mushroom cultivation. He puts farmers in control of their produce through his land-to-lab strategies and training and support for "mushroom entrepreneurs." In addition to creating new livelihood opportunities for thousands of unemployed youth and landless families in Assam, Pranjal is developing a new market for mushroom consumption. By federating farmers, he is creating systems that aim to put an end to farmer exploitation in the northeast region.

Description of Volunteer Opportunity

While the rest of India is booming, Assam, which possesses the lowest per capita GDP growth in India is being left behind.  In Assam, 64% of the population depend directly on farming for their income but agriculture only accounts for less than 4% of the GDP.  The farmers in Assam work hand to mouth earning little or no real income. Farmers face the problem of either being exploited by unscrupulous businesses or being entirely blocked from certain markets in which cartels have formed.

Required Skills and Experience:

Strong Research and English Writing Skills;

Experience with impact studies a plus, as is knowledge of agriculture.
