Google is a company that believes deeply in entrepreneurship. And this is a company that believes deeply in the power of information. We don’t think there’s another organization that combines these two things in a more compelling way than Ashoka.

Law for All: Historical Opportunity

Democratic institutions and government have not developed at the same pace as globalization and the growth of new wealth.

Citizens in some societies face a breakdown in rule of law, with limited freedom of speech, expression, or movement. The most outspoken members of these societies suffer threats, intimidation, violence, and arrest.

Elsewhere, individuals do not benefit from existing laws and policies – presumably passed for their benefit. With limited enforcement, accountability, transparency, due process, or legal representation, individuals are unable to live the full extent of the law.

Typically, information, power, and influence are concentrated in the hands of small groups of private political interests. Marginalized communities –poor, indigenous, minority, disabled, women, children and others – are disproportionately disenfranchised.

Ashoka’s Law for All initiative works with Ashoka Fellows and civil society leaders from multiple sectors to strengthen and expand democratic spaces and values through political, social, and legal recourse.
