Christa Gannon
This profile was prepared when Christa Gannon was elected to the Ashoka Fellowship in 2010.
Christa is changing the culture of the juvenile justice system by getting it to listen to young people and turning it into a place of transformation for troubled youth. Using her knowledge and experience working with juvenile justice youth in California, Christa founded Fresh Lifelines for Youth (FLY), which provides legal education, mentoring, and leadership development for thousands of teens. The program has drastically lowered recidivism rates, provided a family environment for many young people who have lacked positive support from their own families, created a ceasefire zone among rival gang members, and put numerous teenagers on a path away from crime and toward college, jobs, and community service. The juvenile justice systems in other counties have already begun requesting FLY’s services, and Christa is planning to replicate the program across the country.
