Google is a company that believes deeply in entrepreneurship. And this is a company that believes deeply in the power of information. We don’t think there’s another organization that combines these two things in a more compelling way than Ashoka.

East Africa

Ashoka was the first organization to publicly recognize Social Entrepreneurs as a major driving force in transforming human welfare in the East African region. Since 2001 when two Ugandans were recognized as Ashoka Fellows, the region is now home to 26 Ashoka Fellows who are creatively restructuring society’s health, environment, human rights, education, civic engagement and economic development in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Together, leading social entrepreneurs are slowly but surely shaping the East African citizen sector to become more entrepreneurial, competitive, regionally and globally integrated.

Since its inception in the region Ashoka has partnered with the Gatsby Charitable Trust to raise finances to invest in budding ideas for social change. This seed financing has enabled Ashoka to expand its operations from Uganda to Kenya and Tanzania and to increase the number of Ashoka Fellows benefiting from Ashoka’s stipends and support services.
