Civic Engagement

Overview:

The term “citizen sector” applies to the realm of activity that brings the power of private citizens to bear on important public issues. Implicit in the idea of a vibrant citizen sector are vibrant citizens—individuals, families and communities that devote their time and energy to public causes. They attend town meetings, monitor elections, volunteer at schools, and contribute to bettering society.

The rise and spread of democracy has made the citizen sector not only possible, but absolutely necessary. Through their civic engagement, citizens help society grow; they hold their government to standards of accountability, transparency, and responsiveness. This emerging sector has been growing at an unprecedented rate over the last three decades and is reorganizing the way the work of society gets done.

The ongoing effort to empower citizens to create positive social change is clearly articulated in the work of Ashoka Fellows. Whether effectively organizaing the voices of private citizens or by making people realize that contributing to society also benefits the self, social entrepreneurs are empowering a culture of participation.

Learning About Democracy Through Volunteerism

Krzysztof Stanowski from Poland is effecting democratic change throughout Central and Eastern Europe by creating a network of volunteer groups comprised of educators and civil leaders. Krzysztof believes that such networks of committed individuals can help restore the region’s frayed social bonds, solve pressing problems, and by strengthening collaboration across borders, encourage civic action in the face of rising national and regional prejudices. Creating Public-Private Partnerships

Douglas Racionzer from South Africa is bringing economic opportunity and social development to marginalized townships by transforming existing small businesses into successful enterprises that also serve as delivery networks for a variety of community services. Douglas gives neighborhood entrepreneurs the expertise and resources they need to expand their operations from mom-and-pop shops to real commercial enterprises, at the same time, using their position in the community to deliver needed services like HIV testing. As a result, shop owners increase their earning potential, provide jobs for others in the community and contribute to the overall well-being of the neighborhood. More
